Prospects of Algerian-Moroccan Relations after the Arab Spring

Auther : Issa Ahmad Alshelby

The problem of the Western Sahara in the Valley of Gold is one of the important and vital issues that concerned a number of regional countries in the Maghreb region and had a special status in the political life of the Maghreb countries on the official and popular levels with all its local, regional and international aspects. The Arab Maghreb region, through its long political history, has been a political unit whose geographic scope is widened or narrowed by the strength or weakness of political power. The national resistance in Western Sahara against the French and Spanish occupation forces has appeared one year after Morocco gained its independence in 1956 under the leadership of the Moroccan Liberation Army, which derived its strength from the tribes of the Sahara, which shows the depth of historical and political roots of the relations between Algeria and Morocco. The study required examining the Algerian-Moroccan relations in the context of two important issues: the first required studying the border issue between Morocco and Algeria in the period from 1989 to 2005, while the second required studying the Algerian-Moroccan relations in the context of the Western Sahara issue up to the stage of post-Arab spring.
Keywords: Moroccan-Algerian relations, Problem of Western Sahara, Arab Spring, Regional and international relations.
