Auther : Tareq Nammorah Hussam Husien Nazem Essa
This study aimed at using the geographic information systems to facilitate the study of topographical and morphological characteristicsof river basins especially large and shared basins between countries such as Quweiq basin, which is located in the plateau of the north western Syrian city of Aleppo, while its source is located in Turkey. The study was carried out in 2015 using 18 topographic Maps at scale 1:50000 covering the entire area within Syria. Digital Elevation Model data (DEM-SRTM 90m) was used to complete the data about the Turkish part, and data was processed using the geographic information system (ArcGIS). The results showed that Basin has an Area of 5831 km2, a Perimeter of 900 km, a Length of 145 km and a width of 41 km, Form Factor is 0.2, Basin Circularity is 0.41, Basin Elongation is 0.5, Lemniscate Ration is 0.88, and Compactness Factor is 12.4. The Topographic characteristics showed that most of land of the Quweiq Basin has a slight slope and it has reached advanced ages of its geomorphological cycle and arrived to old age stage.
