Extermism and Weak Belonging and the Relationship Between the Two Among University Students in Gaza Governorates

The present study aims to identify the prevalence of both extremism and weak belonging and the relationship between the two among university students in Gaza Governorates, as well as to identify differences between extremism and weak belonging due to gender, academic level, place of residence, and political affiliation. The study was conducted on a typical random sample of (180 students) male and female from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza. Two extremism and weakness scales developed by asslea were used. The study found that among university students, the level of extremism was average, while social extremism ranked top with a relative weight of (27.38%), followed by family extremism with a relative weight of (27.22%) and thirdly "political extremism" with a relative wright of (23.81%). The results indicate that the respondents have a degree of weak belonging. Weak family belonging ranked first with a relative weight of (27.40%), followed be weakness political affiliation with a relative wight of (25.68%) and weak national belonging with a realtive weight of (24.53%); and finally weakness of social affiliation with a realtive wright of (22.37%). The results of the stidy showed the presence of statistically significant differances in extremism according to social category where differences came in favor of male. Differences in family belonging were in favor of first year students. An indicative correlation was noted between the high degree of extremism and weak belonging. Students with a low degree of extremism, have a high degree of belonging.
