Auther : Talal Abd Al Mute Mustafa
The study aims at analyzing the systematic aspect of academic theses (MA and Ph.D.) granted during the period of (2005-2014) in the Department of Sociology of Damascus University by evaluating the problems tackled in the research and the degree of mastering its formulation in addition to examining the theoretical frameworks and approaches underlying these problems. It also measures the degree of selecting the appropriate methods and techniques for data collection as well as the presentation and analysis of the results.
To achieve the objectives of this study, the researcher followed a descriptive analytical approach that is appropriate to the nature of the current study, being an evaluation study, and useful to achieve its objectives. A content-analysis tool was adopted for the analysis of the content of the academic theses, and the unit of analysis in this study was the academic thesis (MA and Ph.D.). The researcher conducted a comprehensive survey of all the theses available in the Higher Studies Library at the Department of Sociology of the University of Damascus, which reached a total of (123) Master and Doctorate theses. The study concluded the following:
1- Most Master's and Ph.D. theses lack the solid principles of sociological research and its basic rules. 2- Dominance of field studies, that are interested in current and partial issues, away from the theoretical subjects. 3- Excessive reliance on quantitative techniques for data collection, particularly the questionnaire. 4- Lack of harmony between the theoretical and field frameworks.
