Jordan-NATO Relations 1995-2014

Auther : Kheir S. Diabat

This study discusses the relationships between Jordan and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) since Jordan's accession to the NATO-Mediterranean Dialogue in 1995. The two sides have made some progress toward implementation of their political and military cooperation toward many international and regional issues. The study is based on the premise that "there is a correlation between the integration of the goals of both NATO and Jordan, and the strengthening of their alliance and partnership". To exemplify this, the study discusses the mutual interests and goals as well as the areas of cooperation that can bring both sides together. In this study, the researcher has adopted the descriptive as well as the historical analytical approach as one of the methodological tools that best fit to clarify the major aspects of this study. The study has proved its premise, and also concluded the specificity of this partnership that links Jordan with the NATO, which has fulfilled many security and political gains for both sides such as re-balancing of Jordan's regional and international relations after the second Gulf crisis in 1990, and enhancing this partnership in confrontation of many common challenges, in addition to cooperationin many military missions, whether it was at the international level (Kosovo and Afghanistan) or at the regional level (Iraq and Libya).
