Use of Ttechnology In the Service of Terrorism "Social Networking Sites Model" (An Analytical Study)

The study aimed to identify the terrorist organizations' methods of employing technology (social networking sites model) in terrorism service of terrorism within six major themes: psychological warfare through propaganda and media, recruitment, financing, planning and coordination, connected netwoeks, and information extraction and sharing. To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive and analytical approach was implemented in addition to the content analysis of (92) video clips chosen randomly from the social media networks (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail) of three terrorist organizations accodring to the classification stipulated in the resolution of the Arab Interior Ministes' Council of 2016; only sixc video clips out of (92) were excluded from analysis, for one of them was too short with a vague message, two were recorded in a foreign language not translated to Arabic or English, and three were response messages sent to the groups' leaders that were not listed under any of the six above-mentioned themes. The most important results of the study included the following: the teme of "psychological warfare through propaganda and media" came first on the list of the practices used by terrorist organizations across social networking sites with a score of 44.1%, while the tjeme of "information extraction and sharing" came last with a score od 2.32%. In accodance with these results, the study procided a set of recommendations, the most important of which is that the study findings were useful to decision-makers, intelligence analysts, and researchers to better understand the best practices and campaigns of the extremist grous, and the would also hepl in setting counter-terrorism strategies and in tactyics training for the military.
