The Web Presence of Higher Institutions in Egypt: A Web Metric Study

This study aims to evaluate critically the web presence efficiency of higher institutions' websites in Egypt. This main objective will be investigated through the next questions: how many higher institution in Egypt has a website on the internet, to what extent higher institutions in Egypt are indexed in web search engines, do websites administrators do a canonical optimization or not, what is the preferred Top Level Domains (TLDs) for higher institutions' websites in Egypt, what is the most indexing search engine for the higher institutions' websites in Egypt, what is the rank of higher institutions in Egypt according to Web Impact Factor (WIF) and Revised Web Impact Factor (RWIF) and is there a correlation between WIF and RWIF for higher institutions' websites in Egypt. The study sample consists of 65 higher institutions' websites. The result revealed is that 65 of 153 higher institutions had a website (42%). According to visibility on web search engines Higher Institution of Administrative Sciences - Bani Sweif got the first place in the top ten places (Using URLs** with www) and Giza Engineering Institute (Using URLs without www). Higher institutions' websites administrators did not do a Canonical Optimization. The most popular targeted TLD for the higher institutions developers was edu.eg. The most indexing search engine for the webpages whether under www domain or under root domain was google. After sorting gathered data according to WIFs values descending; Higher Institution of Management and Secretariat - Masr Kadema obtained the first place in the top ten places. Moreover, the data analyzed indicates that there was not a correlation between WIF RWIF.
