Some Psychological and Personal Characteristics of Secondary School Students who Stutter

The purpose of this study was to assess Some psychological and personal characteristics of secondary school students who stutter. This study examined differences between stutterers students and nonstutterers students in social anxiety , loneliness, self-esteem and adjustment to study. It examined differences among stutterers students in social anxiety , loneliness, self-esteem and adjustment to study. This study examined the relationship between social anxiety and the variables of the study. The sample consisted of 68 (34 stutterers; 34 nonstutterers) students, including 34 stutterers students, their mean age 15.3 years with a standard deviation 0.87 years, and 34 nonstutterers students, their mean age 15.4 years with a standard deviation 0.89 years. The sample was selected from Elahmadi schools.
Data were collected by using scale of social anxiety , scale of loneliness, scale of Rosenberg self-esteem, scale of adjustment to study and a questionnaire of type stuttering. The consistency and reliability of these scales have been previously measured.
Results revealed that social anxiety and loneliness levels were significantly higher in stutterers students than in nonstutterers students. adjustment to study levels were significantly higher in nonstutterers students than in stutterers students. There are no significant differences between stutterers students and nonstutterers students in self-esteem. There is a negative correlation between social anxiety and adjustment to study. There is a negative correlation between loneliness and self-esteem among stutterers students. adjustment to study served positively to predict social anxiety among stutterers students.
