Poverty Dynamics in Jordan Society An Applied Study

Auther : Muneer Karadsheh Ahmed Abu-Haidar

The study aimed at identifying the dynamics which generate poverty in Jordanian households in order to find out any relationship between their demographic, social and economic characteristics and the phenomenon of poverty. To achieve its objectives, the study conducted a survey which covered 3000 households across the Kingdom. In addition, a logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for a household's vulnerability to fall into poverty. The study has shown that there are sets of factors and dynamics that most likely impact Jordanian households' poverty. These important factors include: noticeable high poverty ratios among families residing in rural areas, small cities, households with low education levels of the head and spouse, households with a high number of children, kinship marriages, broken homes, disintegrated social ties, early marriages of women, older husbands.  The results also showed a high rate of fertility in poor families, as well as high economic dependency, a high rate of unemployment, and low male and female contribution to the labor force. Furthermore, the study found that poverty in Jordan is income-related rather than the result of a shortage of capabilities or services. Overall, the deteriorating economic conditions manifested in low incomes, along with accompanying social and cultural factors, can be fertile ground for generating yet more reasons for the rise of further poverty.
Key words: Poverty dynamics, Poverty profile, Poverty determinants, Absolute poverty, Abject poverty, Fertility, Economic participation, Demographic dependency ratio.
