Kuwaiti Citizen's Awareness of the Importance of Political Participation in Deterring Political Violence

Auther : Yousuf G. Ali Hussain M. Al-Fadhli

The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes of Kuwaitis toward the causes of political violence and to assess their level of awareness of such a problem with particular emphasis on political participation as a mechanism of political stability. Researchers used a random sample of 1,450 males and females with different age groups coming from the six governorates of Kuwait. In consistence with the political socialization theoretical approach and related literature, the study included several hypotheses focusing on the relationship between political participation as dependent variable and some other independent variables such as gender, age, level of education, family income, social involvement and networking, organization membership, sect, degree of religiosity, and level of cultural, sectarian, and tribal tolerance. Descriptive and regression statistical analysis were used to analyze data. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of respondents showed a greater awareness of the nature and causes of political violence. Furthermore, statistically significant differences were found between the dependent variable, political participation, and some other independent variables. Findings indicated that well-to-do male Sunni adults who are more religious, more tolerant, and more involved in civic affairs, are likely to be aware of the importance of political participation and viewing it as a critical mechanism to deter the political violence phenomenon. The study also found a significant difference between males and females in terms of involvement in society's civic affairs. Finally, the study concluded with some policy recommendations.
