Russian-Chinese Relationships: 1991-2010

Auther : Saddah A. Al Habashneh Mohammed H. Al Katatsheh

The aim of this study is to investigate the main areas of Russian-Chinese agreements and disputes during the period 1991-2010. Through using a descriptive case study approach, this study concludes the following: First, Russian-Chinese relationships started to improve as far back as 1989, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, after the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the fading of ideological differences between the two countries, this relation picked up momentum at an unprecedented level. Second, co-operation between the two countries is obvious on several levels and regarding different matters. For Example, Russia is in need of Chinese support in a number of issues chief of which is dealing with the expansion of NATO in the former USSR countries as in Ukraine and Georgia, the Missile Shield, and the issue of Kosovo's independence which Russia opposes. On the other hand, China seeks Russian support in such matters as the American intervention in the issue of human rights in China, Chinese armament, and the Taiwan Question. Third, Russian-Chinese relationships have developed in almost all economic, military, cultural and human areas.  Fourth, despite this important improvement in Russian-Chinese relations, there still exists some profound disputes between the two countries particularly with regard to demographic disorder, competition over networks of oil and gas, the Russian military support of India (China's archenemy),and the development of Chinese relations with America (Russia's top rival). Fifth, future scenarios of the relation between Russia and China vary, although it is quite likely that a strategic coordination will prevail.
