Patterns of Iraqi Population Distribution and their Spatial Diffusion
Auther : Abbas Fadhil Al-Saadi
The aim of this paper is to study the patterns of population distribution and their spatial diffusion in Iraq.
The paper shows that the first level of population concentration is distributed in three areas. The largest is a continuous geographical belt in the middle of Iraq comprising eleven provinces with Baghdad at its centre, which forms the largest population nucleus in the country. There are also two more population belts: the first one in the north of Iraq (Al-Mosul & Kirkuk provinces), the second in the south of the country (Basrah & Al- Nasiriya provinces).
The statistical study has shown that the transport factor was very effective in the formation of population distribution, beside other significant variables such as the agricultural and industrial activities.
It is noticed that the densely populated areas extend over four curves: the north curve, the middle curve, the north middle curve, and the south curve; whereas population dispersal areas lie in the suburbs in the eastern, western and southern parts of Iraq within continuous stretches of deserts.
Keywords: Bad distribution, Concentration in the middle, Dispersal in the suburbs.
