The Relationship between Mothers' Cultural Background and Methods of Interaction with their Adolescent Offspring
Auther : Aziza Al-Naeem
This study describes the variations between urban and rural mothers in the relationship of mothers' cultural background and their methods of interaction with their offspring. The study determined dialogue, decision-making, social distance, and confidence as methods of interactions. Using social survey and comparative methods, subjects were drawn systematically from 40 mothers living in Riyadh city and 40 mothers living in villages in Jizan Province, south west of Saudi Arabia. The study found significant differences between the two groups in their methods of interactions on the scale as a whole, but no significant differences were noticed between the two groups in indicators, except in "social distance", due to the continuous migration from villages to Riyadh, where mothers carried along with them their rural and nomadic values. The study also found that "Dialogue "and "social distance" methods are affected by rural mothers' socioeconomic status. It was further noticed that the age factor affected "decision-making" in urban mothers only. The study concluded that while rural mothers benefit from improvement in their social and economic status, urban mothers' interactions with offspring are hampered by modern city life influences like various peer backgrounds, social media, and various recreational destinations.
