Mobile Phone and Driving Behaviors: The Role of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies as Mediators

Auther : Abdrabo M. Soliman

The aim of this study was to examine the role of Cognitive Regulation of Emotion Strategies (CRESs) as mediators in the relationship between mobile use and mobile involvement and patterns of driving behavior. A sample of (154) college students aged (24-9) years old, with average driving experience five years were administered a number of scales measuring mobile use and mobile involvement and patterns of driving behavior (errors, violation, lapses and aggressive violations) as well as CRES (self-blame, rumination, acceptance, positive refocusing, refocusing on planning, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, catastrophizing and other- blame). The multi-mediators analysis revealed that there is a general effect and direct effect both mobile use and mobile involvement on all type of driving behavior I.e. driving error, violations, lapses and aggressive violations. The results also showed that there were indirect negative effects for a number of CRESs on driving errors, lapses and aggressive violations. Furthermore, the results showed positive effects for the strategies of self-blame and rumination on driving behaviors. However, the results did not indicate any significant indirect effect of the CRES when examining the effect of mobile uses on driving violations nor when examining the effect of mobile involvement on driving errors.
