The Development of Wind Energy Projects in Kuwait Using Geographic Information System

Auther : Obaid S. AlOtaibi Salman Y. AlFailkawi

Objective: The study aims to: 1) Recognize the importance of using alternative energy in Kuwait in economic and enfironmental terms; 2) Employ the applications of gepgraphic information systems (GIS) by identifying a set of appropriate criteria for choosing the most suitable sites for establishing wing energy projects, 3) Benefiting the decision makers and planners through using the results of the study to develop energy production projects in the future. Methodology: The researchers used the Suitability Model to analyze the study criteria within the Arc GIS program. Results: The areas (Al-Shqaya, Al-Dabbaba, and Al-Salmi) which are in the west of Kuwait, are the first suitable sites for future development of wind frams. (Al-Abdali) area at the north occupies the second place; while (Umm Al-Hayman), in the south occupies the third place, and the south western area (North of Al-Wafra and Al-Shaqeeq) are in the fourth order. They form a tributary of potential clean electric power in Kuwait. Conclusion: Wind energy has an acceptable encironmental impact compared to the traditional energy systems. However, selecting suitable sites for wind farms is one of the biggest challenges to wind energy development. Spatial analysis should be conducted to determine the most appropriate locations before making decisions on wind power projects. Beacuse wind power projects generally require large inmestments, finding suitable sites is a crucial step for the success of these projects in economic terms.
