Task Value as a Mediator on the Relationship between Parenting Styles and Academic Achievement for Basic Education Student in the Sultanate of Oman

Objective: The present study aimed to examine the mediating effects of math's task value in the relationship between parenting syles and academic achievement. Methods: Among sample of 734 male and female from grade 7-10 of the basic education students in the Sultanate of Oman. The two researchers used the Pareanting styles Scale, which consists of 20 statements that measure the three styles of parenting (permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative), and the task value scale, which consists of 6 statements that measure students' perceptions of the subject of mathematics. Educational achievement was also measured by the use of student grades in the last semester. Results: The path analysis results showed that students' academic achievement could be predicted by the two parents' authoritative style and mother permissive style and father authoritarian style in addition to task value. Task value mediated the relationship between authoritative parenting style and academic achievement. The results indicated statstically significant gender differences on permissive and authoritarian parenting styles favouring male children. Gender differences were also found in academic achievement favouring females. Statistically significant differences were found based on grades favoring grade-7 students in father's authourtative and father and mother's authoritarian style as well as in task value. Conclusion: The Task value can predict academic achievement, and it has a mediating role in the relationship between academic achievement and some types of parenting styles.
