Self-Esteem, Depression and Anxiety among Addicts

Drug addiction is a universal problem which has hallanged human civilization throughout history. The negative effects of addiction The negative effects of addiction on peoples social and emotional life and health have been confirmed by many studies. This study aims to provide an indication of the level of depression, stress and anxiety experienced by addicts in comparison with non-addicts in Kuwaiti society. Spielbergers State-Trait Inventory for anxiety adapted by Abdel-Khalek (1992), Becks Depression Inventory, and
Rosenberg scale for self-esteem adapted by Al-Khawaja were administered to 49 addicts, and a 49 control group. The results showed that there is a correlation between drug addiction and level of depression and anxiety. When addicts scored higher on both scales, a negative correlation was also found between self-esteem and addiction.
