Impact of Increased Traffic Volume on the City of Riyadh Challenges and Opportunities

The paper aims to analyze the most important of daily traffic in the city of Riyadh, along with the negative effects of its heavy volume, especially in the light of future predictions of annual population growth as well as the increase of car trips, which undoubtedly will endanger future vehicular unless certain necessary measures are taken. As the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh is considered one of the fastest growing cities in terms of urbanism and population. The city’s population has reached 4.5 million and continues to grow at a rate of 8% annually. It is expected to reach 10.5 million by 2022. This will make daily movement inside the city an issue of complex dimensions given the fast growth in the citizenity, the expansion of the city and the reliance of people on private automobiles due to their high incomes and lack of suitable alternative means of transport. This has resulted in increased congestion during peak hours as well as increase of travel time and the cost of trips in addition to deteriorating levele of traffic safety and increased environmental pollution. The study assumes quantitative scientific analysis relying on data and statistics and ADA studies in addition to information from official authorities supervising the development of the city. It concludes by suggesting five strategic orientations to improve traffic movement.
