The Image of the Working Woman as Perceived by her Co-worker
Auther : Abdelmoneim Shehata
This study is concerned with the image of the working woman as perceived by her co-workers, and how it resonnates with the popular image of working women projected by the Egyptian mass media. Working Egyptian women were rated on 32 characteristics by their male co-workers in a university setting. It was found that both the field of specialization and the marital state of the participants were influential in their impression to the female at work. While some differences were rated between participants in the science field as opposed to the arts, as well as between married and unmarried participants, in general the image of the female in the study mirrored the image of working women as portrayed in the media, i.e. interested in her appearance, contemporary in thinking, self-confident, not easily influenced by others, and well-mannered.
