Kuwait and Development Dilemma
Auther : Tariq abdallah
This article aims to highlight the actual discussion concerning the economic challenges that Kuwait has been facing since 1990, especially the privatization issue and the different solutions that officials and intellectuals are advocating. The article tries to set up the historical background of such situation in order to assess the role of the Iraqi invasion and its consequences on Kuwait’s economic system. The writer believes that the economic strategy adopted in Kuwait since the 60’s created an anti-developmental process using the oil sector as quasi-rent revenue generator without connecting it to a sustainable and integrated developmental vision. The article comes to the conclusion that efforts should be intensified in order to draw up an integrated long term strategy expected in due course to diversify the national economy and to become a prelude for a solid cooperation with the Gulf and the other Arab countries.
