A new approach to accelerated strength testing

ABSTRACT

 

This paper presents a procedure for expediting the development of the compressive strength of concrete specimens by utilising accelerating admixtures along with high-temperature moist curing. Besides being practical, the proposed procedure permits a reliable prediction of the 28-day strength of concrete from I-day strength. The results obtained provide detailed information on the concrete strength gain for Kuwait materials and conditions; strength correlation equations are established. Optimum curing temperature and accelerator dosages are investigated. The graphs, and consequently the constants appearing in the derived formulas, are restricted to ordinary Portland cement concrete. Yet the proposed approach is applicable to concretes with other types of cement. The cylindrical specimens tested were prepared from concrete mixes with ordinary Portland cement and crushed aggregates composed predominantly of granite and quartz. The concrete mixes cover various water-cement ratios.
