ABSTRACT

Streptomyces of the Red, Yellow, Blue and Green colour series isolated from five plant communities in the desert of Kuwait were studied. The Red series was the most frequent whereas the Green series was rare. In the Red series the following species were identified: Streptomyces cellostaticus, S. erythraeus, S. daghestanicus, S. phaeochromogenes, S. anundae and S. rubra. From the Blue series three species were identified: S. lanatus, S. bellus and S. coeliatus. From the Yellow series, S. xanthochrornogenes and S. coelicolor were identified. S. cellostaticus, S. xanthochromogenes and S. lanatus were more frequent than all other species. In each community species that were found in no other community were recorded. S.phaeochromogenes. S. anandue and S. coeliatus were isolated only from the Rhanterium community, Streptomyces rubra and S. bellus only from Cyperus community and Streptomyces daghestaincus only from the Seidlitzia community. From each series several unidentifiable strains were recorded and described.
