ABSTRACT
The present study deals with the effect of SO2 gas under field conditions on paddy (Oryza sativa L.) var. IR 8, a very popular cultivar in District Muzaffarnagar. Experimental plants were treated with SO2 gas produced inside a fumigation chamber for 30 min every day in the morning hours. A control experiment was run simultaneously. Results show that the effect of SO2 varied according to concentration, i.e. the lower the concentration of SO2 the higher the biomass of vegetative parts and vice versa. Uptake of nitrogen increased up to earing stage; thereafter it declined to the harvest stage in both control and treated plants. Release of nitrogen was recorded from the earing stage to the harvest stage.
