THE EFFECT OF LIGHT AND GLUCOSE SUPPLY ON THE NITRATE ASSIMILATION IN CHLOROPHYLLOUS ROOTS

Abstract

The effect of light and glucose supply on the rate of nitrate uptake and assimilation by excised roots is studied. The green and non-green roots were placed in light or darkness at constant temperature (25؛C), with continuous aeration for 6 hours. Under carbohydrate deficiency, light shows only a slight significant effect on nitrate uptake and assimilation in case of green roots. Upon the addition of glucose to the nutrient media, the rate of nitrate uptake and consequently the rate of nitrate assimilation were generally increased. The rate of nitrate assimilation by green roots in light, in the presence of a considerable quantity of carbohydrate, was higher than that of the non-green roots. The nitrate assimilated ranged from 60% to 90% of the amount absorbed throughout the experiments. The glucose uptake was almost equal in both types of roots under all experimental conditions. The results obtained imply the connection of nitrate assimilation with both respiration and photosynthesis.
