ABSTRACT
The study of the Oman ophiolite near Al-Fujayrah shows that the peridotites forming the lower part of the Semail ophiolite consists of harzburgite with dunite pods containing chromite. These dunite pods are interpreted as cumulate formed from partial melts as they rose upwards through the harzburgite residue. In the layered gabbros above, some banding is due to gravity settling; most is best explained by in situ crystallisation controlled by diffusion and nucleation rates at the crystal-liquid interface. The high-level gabbros above the banded sequence show different textures and more differentiated rocks.
