ABSTRACT
Callus induction occurred on stem segments of Helianthus annuus L. seedlings grown on a modified Murashige & Skoog medium. The medium which promoted the most rapid and sustained callus growth was MS medium containing benzyladenine and indolebutyric acid at concentrations of 0.05 mg1-1 and I .O mg1-1 respectively. Addition of activated charcoal to the nutrient media containing various growth regulators was found to retard callus growth considerably.
