ABSTRACT
An investigation of the effect of some chemical compounds (mostly chlorinated derivatives of /l-phenyl-3-indolyl-propiophenoneo)n the initiation and growth of sunflower callus was carried out. These compounds were used as growth regulators instead of kinetin or 2,4-D. The chemical compounds alone in the culture media used did not stimulate callus initiation. At aconcentration of 10. M, however, some of the compounds investigated were as effective in stimulating callus growth as the control medium (kinetin + 2.4-D). when they were supplied in conjunction with either 2,4-D or kinetin. Moreover, four of the tested compounds could substitute for kinetin in stimulating the initiation and growth of sunflower callus. and two of the compounds substituted for 2.4-D in callus initiation. The growth responses. when the effective compounds were used in conjunction with kinetin, however, were atypical.
