ABSTRACT
1. The effect of concanavalin A (Con A) on the electrogenic transfer of glucose, galactose, glycine and valine was investigated invoitro using everted sacs of the rat jejunum. The short circuit current (s.c.c.), potential difference (p.d.) and tissue resistance were also measured in the presence and absence of the drug.
2. Con A increased apparent Km for glucose, galactose, glycine and valine, decreased S.C.C. and p.d. in the presence of glucose, and inhibited sodium transport.
3. In view of the fact that oxygen consumption was unaffected, it is proposed that Con A did not act by a non-specific mechanism.
