ABSTRACT
The thermal properties of surface sands in Kuwait were determined by field and laboratory tests. The results are presented, discussed and compared with available data for granular soils. The suitability of the local soils for use as a thermal cable backfill was assessed. The results indicate that the surface soils which consist of calcareous fine windblown sand have very low natural moisture content and high thermal resistivity. With temperature increase and progressive drying, the possibility of thermal instability exists. Recommendations for improving the thermal characteristics of the local soils are made.
