ABSTRACT
A condition which constraints on mechanical systems must satisfy is derived using an interesting formulation of mechanics called the Gauss-Appell principle of least constraint. The derivation leads to several alternative geometrical interpretations of the constraint condition in configuration, velocity and acceleration space.
