ABSTRACT

This paper introduces an information theory-based study of the text of the Holy Qursn. The N-gram entropy of the Quranic text where all N-grams occur once has been calculated to be the entropy value at N=163. The entropies between N = l and N=80 are calculated and N=163 is recognized by means of examining the remaining strings with lengths greater than 80 symbols and occurrences greater than one. The study identified the set of the most frequent strings of different lengths as well as the set of the longest strings that occur more than once in the Quranic text. The study calculated a 30% reduction in the space needed to store the Quranic text if the repeated strings were taken into consideration. Furthermore, the results of the study can be used to compile a dictionary which includes all the repeated strings of different lengths and frequencies; such a dictionary can be of great value to the Quranic scholars.
