ABSTRACT

Very dense cemented sand deposits, locally known as `Gatch, exist in Kuwait and the Gulf States. Cementation is caused by cementing agents including calcium carbonates, and sulphates in the form of gypsum aided by the arid environment and the excess of evaporation over rainfall even in the winter season. The material being silty sand is often excavated for foundation placement and used as backfill, and for embankment construction. The influence of remolding is examined by an extensive laboratory testing program involving consolidated undrained triaxial tests, and consolidation tests. Tests were carried out on undisturbed samples and on remolded samples after destruction of the cementation bonds. The remolded samples were prepared by static compaction to have the same unit weight and void ratio as the natural undisturbed samples. The results indicate that remolding resulted in the loss of the cohesion component of shear strength c and a slight reduction in the angle of friction ِ. Compressibility increased significantly due to remolding as indicated by the increase of the compression index Cs, and the swelling index Cc. The influence of the amount of fines on the behavior of the remolded samples is examined.
