ABSTRACT

Pakistan is located in a region where South Asia converges with Central Asia and the Middle East. In order to improve trade and economic activities, and to increase regional linkages with neighbouring countries, the country is gearing up towards a large infrastructure network. Roads constitute a vital part of the infrastructure. The drastic increase in traffic volume during the last few decades has resulted in premature pavement failures of almost the entire road network of Pakistan.

The objective of this research was to compare the Superpave, Stone Mastic Asphalt and Marshall methods of mix design of asphaltic concrete using a wheel tracking machine, and to propose a rut-resisting asphalt mix suitable for local loading and environmental conditions. Testing was performed under the prevailing load and environmental conditions of Pakistan in order to compare the performance of mixes. The mixes selected for the study were densely graded in the case of the Superpave and Marshall methods, whereas they were gap-graded for Stone Mastic Asphalt. Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) performed better against rutting when compared to the Superpave and Marshall mixes. The wheel tracking test can be considered to be a simple performance test for the comparison of rutting resistances of various asphalt mixes.
