A field survey of GSM radiation in the State of Kuwait

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a measurement study on GSM frequency radiation in the State of Kuwait, where radiation levels emitted from randomly selected GSM base stations in inhabited areas are measured. The results are compared to international and national limits. Thirty-two towers are surveyed, where at each tower, the radiation level at ten locations surrounding each tower is measured. The highest recorded level is found at the Qazaly tower reaching a maximum of 7665 µW/m2, while most of the other measured locations exhibit levels much below this value to a minimum of 40 µW/m2 . In addition to this study, a literature survey on health hazards and limits associated with high frequency radiation is presented. Based on this survey, it is found that the literature is mixed on associating the radio frequency radiation with health hazards. There is however, agreement that high frequency radiation, at high exposure levels, yields a heating effect which is found to cause damage in the form of tissue burning. Other recent research has shown a statistical relation between GSM frequency and several health hazards. Our measurement results show that the radiation from GSM towers in Kuwait do not exceed the current international and national limits. However, recent studies have recommended reducing these limits to levels below the measured radiation levels of GSM towers in Kuwait with the intention that caution must be taken when dealing with radiation even at levels lower than current limits.
