ABSTRACT
Student attrition (dropping out) wastes times and resources for both students and institutions. In this paper, we consider logistic regression models to identify factors that lead to student attrition and gain insight into possible measures to reduce the attrition rate. In addition, a technique was developed for modeling student flow based on a markov chain formulation. The Model illustrates a non-stationary Markov chain which admits a closed form analysis. Data from all 1993-1994 freshmen students in Kuwait University over the years 1993-1999 were used to evaluate those models.
Keywords: Attrition factors; logistic regression model; markov chain; student retention.
