Design of reinforced concrete columns for minimum cost

ABSTRACT 

An efficient structural design should have not only adequate strength and serviceability but also a minimum overall cost. These design goals are the principal consideration of this paper, which presents a fresh and reliable analytical procedure for designing rectangular and circular reinforced concrete columns, under concentric or eccentric loading and failing in compression or in tension, so that the overall cost is kept to a minimum and the strength requirements are satisfied. The study has also proved that the optimal cross-section of a compression-controlled column is obtained when the required steel reinforcement is set equal to the minimum permissible reinforcement as specified by the building codes. The procedure is depicted in easily applied formulae developed to help directly obtain the optimal cross-sectional dimensions of columns and the required steel reinforcement. The present paper is related to a previous paper by the author aimed at designing a variety of slabs and beams for a minimum cost. It is hoped that the two related papers have successfully tackled the problem of designing sundry types of reinforced concrete members so that the product is simultaneously safe, strong and most economical. Appendix A provides an exact solution for designing rectangular columns with small eccentricities in lieu of the approximate solution developed in the main text. However, the former solution is rather tedious to use unless aided by a computer. Worked examples are given in Appendix B to illustrate the application of the procedures.
