 ABSTRACT

An intergeneric triploid hybrid (2n = 3x = 21; ABE genomes) was produced between durum wheat Triticum turgidum L. (2n = 4x = 28; AABB), and diploid wheatgrass, Lophopyrum elongatum (Host) A. Lِve (2n = 2x = 14; EE). The sum of 2432 florets of durum wheat were pollinated with pollen from the wheatgrass. Eight embryos were rescued and one intergeneric hybrid was obtained. Genomic relationships and chromosome pairing were assessed in the presence of the Ph1 gene at meiotic metaphase I. The F1 hybrid exhibited perennial growth habit and tillered profusely. Typical glaucous color of the hybrid leaves and stems was similar to the wheatgrass parent. Hybrid spikes were sterile and larger than both parents and the durum awns were partially expressed. An average of 7.76% of the chromosomes complement paired. Mean chromosome associations were 0.03 III + 0.01 II ring + 0.76 II rod + 19.37 I and 0.84 chiasmata per cell, with a mean arm pairing frequency of 0.04. Chromosome pairing was low owing to the active Ph1 gene that suppressed homologous pairing between chromosomes of the A, B and E genomes. The formation of trivalents indicated intergenomic pairing among the three genomes. The use of manipulated Ph1 durum germplasm and breeding implications of the ABE hybrid are discussed.
