Transient analysis of single-phase two-winding linear transformers using a distributed-parameter s-domain method

 ABSTRACT

Based on a distributed-parameter model of a single-phase two-winding linear transformer, closed-form s-domain expressions are derived for the temporal and spatial voltage and current distributions along the primary and secondary windings under transient conditions. These expressions take into account both the inductive and capactive coupling between the two windings, in addition to the usually-considered inter-turn coupling within each winding. Using a numerical inverse Laplace transform, the time-domain solution, and the corresponding spatial distributions are obtained for various exciting voltages at the transformer s terminals. Numerical simulation results of several case studies are presented here using the proposed s-domain method, and are compared with those obtained from the well-known circuit simulation program SPICE which uses a cascaded lumped-parameter model.
