Mechanical properties of concerte made with treated wastewater at ambient and elevated temperatures

ABSTRACT

This study is concerned with an experimental investigation of the effect of elevated temperatures on the compressive strength of concrete made with treated wastewater. Concrete cube specimens were cast using tap water (TW), primary treated wastewater (PTWW), secondary treated wastewater (STWW), and tertiary treated wastewater (TTWW) obtained from a local wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The following properties of concrete were tested: setting time, compressive strength at ambient and elevated temperatures (up to 700°C), and resistance to corrosion of reinforcing steel. Wastewater samples were collected from treatment plants in Kuwait and subjected to chemical analyses.

Results have indicated that concrete made with PTWW and STWW showed lower strengths at ambient temperatures and longer setting times than concretes made with TW and TTWW. In general, at elevated temperatures, the strength of concrete made with treated wastewater exhibited lower values than concrete made with TW. Meanwhile, the potential for steel corrosion increased with the use of PTWW and STWW, especially when a thinner cover to the reinforcing steel was used.
