Earthquake hazard in Kuwait

ABSTRACT

On June 2, 1993 an earthquake of magnitude 4.7 on the Richter’s scale, followed by numerous aftershocks, occurred in Kuwait. Although the location of the earthquake was inaccurate (due to poor station coverage), it is estimated that the epicenter fell at about 150km south from Kuwait city. Inspite of its modest magnitude the earthquake was widely felt and caused panic in the city. In Kuwait seismic hazard could result from the nearness of Kuwait to the well known Main Zagros Thrust. Such hazard could also result form excessive fluid withdrawal, fluid injection and intraplate seismicity within the Arabian plate. Sinkholes have been reported to form as a consequence of fluid and fine grain sediment mobilization in cavities found in limestone rocks. The spatial correlation between recent, moderate-sized earthquakes and oil fields suggests that the seismicity may be partially related to oil production. A permanent microearthquake seismic network and a broad-band seismic station in Kuwait is proposed to monitor local and regional seismicity and to assess the earthquake hazard in Kuwait.
