ABSTRACT

Fayfa Mountains (South western Saudi Arabia) is a meeting place for the floristic elements of the African, Irano-Turanean and Mediterranean zones. A preliminary account of the flora of Fayfa Mountains is presented, based on extensive field and herbarium studies.  Topography, geology and climate are also briefly discussed. A checklist of 537 species falling in 85 families is listed; of these 340 are perennials and 197 annuals. The list is arranged in three categories, viz. Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms.     The classification proposed by Arthur Cronquist is followed here to arrange the families while genera and species are arranged alphabetically under each category. Melilotus officinalis (L.) Pall., belonging to the family Fabaceae, is reported for the first time for the flora of Saudi Arabia and another 26 species are reported as new records (*) to the region.
