ABSTRACT

Air conditioning in systems in Kuwait consume about 75% of electric energy generated at peak load time. Measures have to be taken to ensure efficient use and operation of A/C systems, thereby reduce energy consumed in buildings, reduce need for installing additional new power plant, emission of CO2 from fossil fuel power plants, and protect the environment. Measures for efficient use and operation of A/C systems are discussed in this paper. Some measures are to be employed during building design/construction stage, and others may be used during retrofitting of existing buildings. These measures include: application for an integrated approach for the design of building and its mechanical systems like A/C, hot water, lighting, and others; good insulation of building envelope (roofs, walls, windows, etc.); reduction in ventilation load by using minimum required outside air, minimization of infiltration load by careful sealing of openings and cracks, use of efficient windows and shading devices; application of more efficient lighting system; sizing and selection of more efficient A/C equipment; energy conscious operation and maintenance; and enforcement of building efficiency codes. The effect of energy efficient air conditioning system on the electric power consumption in Kuwait is also discussed.
