ABSTRACT
This paper investigates the application of nonlinear control schemes to a static phase shifter used to enhance power system stability. Two sliding mode control laws are proposed for the power system. The first controller is a conventional sliding mode controller; the second controller is a fast terminal sliding mode controller. The two control schemes are developed for a single-machine-infinite-bus system with a static phase shifter used for stability enhancement. Both control schemes guarantee the stability of the system even in the presence of disturbances. Simulations studies are carried out to illustrate the developed controllers. Moreover, robustness studies of the proposed controllers with respect to changes in the parameters of the system due to the faults are presented and discussed. The simulation results indicate that the proposed control schemes work well.
