Control of emissions and burning velocity using gaseous additives in propane-air flames

 ABSTRACT

The effect of hydrogen and ethane addition to propane-air flames is investigated. The effect of these additives on burning velocity and emissions is investigated using a chemical kinetic model consists of 72 chemical reactions among 29 chemical species. With hydrogen addition, the mole fractions of NO, NO2 and N2O decrease under different equivalence ratios and pressures, while for CO, the mole fraction decreases in rich flames and increases in lean flames. The predicted and experimental burning velocities are found to be in good agreement with different addition of stoichiometrically small amounts of hydrogen and ethane, and are correlated linearly with hydrogen concentration. The results show that the hydrogen addition has a more significant effect on increasing the burning velocity compared to ethane addition.
