Vapor compression desalting systems

ABSTRACT

 

This paper presents the basic characteristics of the mechanical vapor compression (VC)

system and its recent technological developments. The effects of the design and operating

parameters on the system performance are discussed. These parameters include evaporator temperature, compression ratio, feed temperature and concentration ratio. The analysis shows that work done and heat transfer surface area of the evaporator depend primarily on the temperature difference across the evaporator. The analysis also indicates that it is essential to bring the feed temperature close to the evaporating temperature in order to reduce the work consumption. This can be done by either increasing the size of the multiflow heat exchanger and/or the supply of auxiliary heat. Comparison of the VC with other desalting systems on available energy basis is presented.
