ABSTRACT
Samples for studying the algal flora of southern Iraq were collected from the River Shatt
al-Arab and some other water systems during the period 1979-1981. In this paper, 55 taxa
(species and varieties) are reported as new records for Iraqi waters. They include Bacillariophyceae (35 taxa), Cyanophyceae (9 taxa), Chlorophyceae (7 taxa), Charophyceae (3 taxa) and Dinophyceae (1 taxon). The lower reaches of the River Shatt al-Arab are characterized by the occurrence of species of marine origin.
