ABSTRACT

Surveys of water chemistry and algal vegetation during four expeditions in Makkah Province

were carried out in April and May 1986. The water source was underground water pumped from wells, collected in reservoirs and distributed in open ducts for irrigation purposes. The waters were moderately alkaline with relatively low concentration of Ca and high concentrations of Mg, CI and P: the concentrations of Fe and Zn were also relatively high. Ammonia typically constituted a range from 4.5-40% of the inorganic nitrogen. The algal flora was mainly Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta.
