Modal characteristics in the free-viration study of clamped-free thin circular cylinders with and without ring stiffeners

ABSTRACT

 

Free-vibration characteristics of clamped-free and clamped-ring stiffened shells (with and without intermediate rings) are studied extensively. Analysis is based on a general solution of Fliigges eighth-order linear partial differential equations of motion for a thin circular cylindrical shell. The modal characteristics of a series of cylindrical shells are obtained by matching the eight boundary conditions at each junction, as well as satisfying four boundary conditions at each end of the composite shell. The differential equations of ring motion allow an accurate treatment of ring characteristics. The ring characteristics (stiffness and inertia) are introduced through the boundary conditions at each junction and at the ends of the shell. Calculations of frequency parameters, displacement components, axial and hoop forces and moments are carried out. Variations of frequency parameter with axial and circumferential wave number are studied, are the variations of axial and hoop forces and moments with the axial co-ordinate. These variations are given in the form of figures.
