Combining multi stage flash (MSF)/reverse osmosis (RO) hybrid desalting system with steam power plant

ABSTRACT

 

This paper suggests combining a large-capacity reverse osmosis (RO) sea water desalting plant with a modern steam power station plant. In the proposal, the high-pressure reverse osmosis pump(s) are to be driven by steam turbine(s). One or two large pumps are used to supply the feed to the whole membrane modules. It is suggested also that the modules size (and capacity) be enlarged. Also, a hybrid reverse osmosis/multi stage flash desalting plant is suggested to combine with a steam power plant and with a turbine driving the RO pumps. The suggested proposal avoids the proliferation of small equipment. It also decreases the size of the steam power plant reheater and cancels the need for the desuperheater section in the feed heaters stages. It also saves the pretreatment cost as well as the pumping power for the MSF system in the hybrid MSF/RO desalting plant.
