ABSTRACT
A.sprryi1lus ,flavus Link ex Fres., A. niger van Tieghem. Fusarium Solani (Maritus) Appel et Wollenweber, Penicillium pinophilum Hedgecole (= P. funiculosum Thom), and Drechslera spicifera( Bainier) von Arx , (= Helminthosporium Spiciferum (Bainier) Nicot) were isolated from broad bean (Faba vulgaris Moench) seed collected from different fields in the Arbil region of Iraq.
Infection of broad bean seed by these fungi lowered significantly the percentage germination when tested on filter paper or in the soil. Culture filtrate of the fungi showed more inhibitory action on germination of broad bean seed as compared with that caused by the direct colonization of the seed by fungi.
Treatment of the seed with the systemic fungicides benomyl and carboxin gave significant reduction in the percentage of seed infection by the fungi. Consequently, both fungicides raised significantly the percentage germination. They also increased significantly the height of emerged plants.
